"Has Aiden said anything to you about how the investigation is going?" I asked Pen as she drove through the light traffic toward the town square.
"No." She shook her head, winced, and added, "He told me the investigation was for the men, so I should stay out of it."
That was another thing I didn't like about Aiden. He thought it was a woman's responsibility to stay home and cook for her husband. Keep the house clean. As Penelope discovered early in their marriage, he was a jerk who hated being wronged or talked back to. So, realistically, there were a lot of things I didn't like about Aiden Winters.
"I can see you imagining ways to get rid of him," Pen said wearily. "He hasn't touched me like that in a long time. It's been almost a year, Talla. I did not lie when you asked."
"I trust you, Pen." I sighed as I looked over at Coffee Bean and saw what appeared to be a first-floor apartment. For me. I even considered converting the top floor into a bedroom suite, complete with bathroom and walk-in closet. It was a little risky, but I wanted to be comfortable.
My grandmother left an ironclad will, so I owned the building outright. It was a women's clothing store in the 1950s. I even had some photos from that time on the walls. It looked great then and it still did now. I was proud of what I had accomplished. I realized that I was lucky to own the building, which irritated my brother to no end. He'd always felt that he should have been our grandmother's beneficiary. Perhaps if he had expressed affection for her, he would have been included. But Grandma Adel saw through Tate's false affection. She wasn't as stupid as she thought Tate was.
"I intend to hire Hallen Brothers Construction to do the renovations. They're the only ones I trust to do exactly what I ask."
Pen snorted. "Any excuse to spend more time with Carlisle."
"Jessop ran the construction."
"Whatever." She shivered. "I'm getting cold chatting in the car. "Let's go inside."
Penelope was right. It was freezing. As we approached my café, I reached for my phone.
Can I make an appointment with you? I want to make the top two floors habitable.
